Wikipedia celebrates 10th anniversary with events across the globe

On January 15, 2011 online open source encyclopedia Wikipedia will celebrate its tenth anniversary.

To mark the occasion, supporters, volunteers and donors on six continents will host more than 100 different events.

Most events are free and are open to participation "by anyone who wants to join in reflecting on our collective accomplishments and goals for the future," says Wikipedia.

Notable North American events set to take place on January 15 include a mini-conference (with pizza and cake) in New York City, a joint Wikipedia and MIT "Mystery Hunt" with T-shirts and stickers up for grabs in Boston, screenings of Wikipedia documentaries in Mexico City and a day-long WikiXDC event (held on January 22) in Washington DC.

Wikipedia celebrations continue around the globe with a two-day Hackathon in Amsterdam (on the 14th and 15th of January), a travelling exhibition in Germany (from January 15 - March 15), a Charity Barbecue Party in Hong Kong (January 15) and a screening of The King's Speech in Tel Aviv (January 14).

Supporters in Catalan-speaking countries have organized an international convention that will see more than 10,000 contributors editing the Catalan-language version of Wikipedia in one day on the 19th of March, 2011.

Wikipedia has made sure that supporters who can't make it to an event don't miss out on the festivities.

Wikipedia Community Department fellow Steven Walling says, "Wikipedia has always been an online community before anything else. That's why we're providing an opportunity for you to share your stories from Wikipedia's first 10 years in many different forms. Please be bold, because we definitely want to hear your ideas for making the 10th anniversary one to remember."

Community members are invited to share their thoughts on what Wikipedia's milestone means to them in a dedicated wiki.
