A new type of breast implant made of triglyceride, a natural vegetable oil, has been developed. Unlike silicone the new implant, called Trilucent, allows the X-rays used in breast screening to pass through it and detect any abnormalities. It also has natural lubricating properties designed to prevent abrasion and leakage.

About 6,000 breast implants are fitted in Britain each year, either to augment existing breast tissue or following cancer surgery.
