"Who said print is dead?," asks the editorial team of new English design mag, 8 Faces, and right they are: the first issue - a limited edition of 1000 copies strong - sold out within only two hours.
Featuring interviews with eight designers on their favorite eight typefaces (the leading question of the issue reads: 'If you could only use eight typefaces for the rest of your life, which would you choose?'), it is not only the concept that makes this new magazine unique, but also its implementation: "Printed on heavy uncoated stock, with a foil-blocked cover, and lovingly pressed at just 1000 limited editions, each issue is a true collector's item. Unlike most magazines, advertising is kept to an absolute minimum and each copy is individually numbered, so 8 Faces will be more at home on your bookshelf than in your magazine rack."
Turns out those 1000 copies were far too humble an estimate. "We had no idea the physical copies would sell out in under two hours," the makers write on their website. "We are so grateful to everyone who bought a copy but unfortunately this means that there are no physical copies left to supply to the shops."
Typography fans can, however, still order digital versions from the website of the magazine after the physical edition has been shipped on August 4. 8 Faces will be a bi-annual publication, with the next issue scheduled to be released just before Christmas.
Designers featured in the first issue include Erik Spiekermann, Jessica Hische, Ian Coyle, Jason Santa Maria, Jos Buivenga, Jon Tan, and Bruce Willen & Nolen Strals.
