Twitter has released a list of the 10 most popular emoji of 2015 - with the ‘tears of joy’ emoji sitting top of the list.

Since the release of the iOS app in 2011, emoji have grown increasingly popular, and made their way into language the world over.

The impact is so huge that Oxford Dictionaries ‘word of the year’ this year was not a word at all - it was ‘tears of joy'.

But what are the actual meanings of these popular pictographs?

A lot of the time, we aren’t actually saying what we think we’re saying when we use emoji. That horrified cat emoji, for instance? It’s not meant to be scared, it’s meant to be tired. The awkward grimace face? It’s meant to be grinning! It’s happy. The little shooting star? It’s meant to mean ‘dizzy’.

So often are we actually using the complete wrong emoji?

Take the quiz below to find out if you’re really saying what you think you are.
