Candles for men: why 'mandles' are perfectly masculine – and here to stay
It's ok for men to use candles. They know that and they are buying them in their hordes
Candles are not just presents for colleagues or friends when you don't know what else to get them. They've become room scents and wonderful perfumes, which enrich your home. And now men have caught on to them: ''mandles'' have been specifically created for men, with male-oriented scents.
Without a hint of jasmine or lavender within nose distance, or other typically floral scents, the mandle appeals to the fragrance-conscious male. And, of course, it is uber fashionable to have a slightly obscure scented candle flickering away on your coffee table or bedside table.
Upmarket high-street shops have found the trend to be on the rise, with sophisticated scents finding their way into the online and real life shopping baskets of males.
The White Company says the sale of candles bought by men has risen to 11 per cent of overall online trade. Céline Roux, fragrance director of Jo Malone, says: “There is a modern male consumer emerging who is interested in a whole host of new things.“
Oliver Zissman, from All Home Everything, is an entrepreneur and works to launch brands to stockists in the UK. As a former interiors store owner dedicated to male customers he is the first to spot trends.
Malin+Goetz have a range of candles with “manly” and earthy scents from dark rum, to tobacco and even cannabis. The range has been inspired by botanical and medicinal properties, with an aim to sooth souls with notes of basil and chestnut. Bourbon and tobacco leaves dominate the tobacco candle, while the cannabis has fresh lemon, orange and notes of fig. It's nearly as relaxing as the actual thing.
For recycling fans, the Rewind range is made from the bottoms of wine bottles, and aptly inspired by the scents of wine. Made from premium natural soy wax, each recycled bottle has been collected and filled with the scent. Signature candles include hearty grape-inspired scents of black cherry, currant, smoke and toast in the cabernet, while the pinot noir has hints of leather and cranberry and the merlot has scents of fruity pomegranate and vanilla as well as magnum-size champagne candles.
For the city lover, ROAM has captured a metropolis within a fragrance. From London to Paris and some American cities in between, each has been encapsulated in a screw top jar and has scents that are reminiscent of that city. The London scent features notes of black pepper, oak moss, labdanum and lavandin, while Paris is a lighter muguet, amber, vanilla and oak moss. Fortunately, they don't produce a Venice scent.
