A man rented a suite at The Savoy Hotel for one night for £10,000 so that he could propose to his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

The occasion was filmed for ITV’s The Savoy, a documentary series that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the landmark London hotel.

In an episode that aired on Wednesday, a couple named Josh and Sarah were filmed enjoying an afternoon tea while the hotel staff set the suite up for the proposal.

The room was filled with candles and scattered rose petals.

After the tea, Josh is seen taking Sarah up to the suite where he gets down on one knee and asks for her hand in marriage. Thankfully, she accepted.

Speaking to the camera after the proposal Josh explained that Sarah always had a soft spot for The Savoy.

“Sarah has always wanted to get married here, it’s one of the most glamorous hotels in London,” he said.

Sarah added: “It’s a special place now whatever happens, this is going to hold a memory forever."

However, viewers of the TV show took to Twitter to express their shock at the cost of Josh’s proposal.

“I can’t cope he’s booked a room for 10k per night to propose to his girlfriend… oh my god,” one person tweeted.

Another added: “Are you telling me he’s paid £10,000 for one night in The Savoy… could live in Thailand for a year for that.”

The Savoy is located on the Strand in central London; it opened in 1889.

It is owned and managed by Fairmont Hotels, which also owns the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
