Meituan - top-selling Chinese daily deal website in June

A new report titled "Chinese Daily Deal Websites 2011 June Report" by daily deal aggregation site Dataotuan.com has revealed that, in terms of number of deals sold, Meituan, was the biggest daily deal site in China in June.

Daily deals sites generally work on the following business model; a discount is offered on a product or a service for a limited period of time; if enough people buy the deal in question then all receive the discount, however if not enough people purchase the deal then no one receives the discount and the money is returned to the buyer.

A new report titled "Chinese Daily Deal Websites 2011 June Report" and released July 20 tracked 149 daily deal sites across 314 cities in China and was compiled using data from June 01-30, 2011.

In terms of total number of deals sold, Chinese site Meituan was the top daily deal site in June, followed by tuan.qq or QQ which is owned by the Chinese media giant Tencent.

The findings represent a significant improvement in the market for Meituan and QQ, which were ranked, in terms of deals sold, third and fourth in May.  

Groupon, one of the biggest daily deals sites in the Western market, operates under the name of Gaopeng in China, though it also bought the domain name and business clone Groupon.cn in April 2011. The data shows that from May June Gaopeng slipped outside of the rankings of the top ten sites in terms of deals sold.

In terms of total number of deals offered, QQ was ranked in first place in both May and June whereas Meituan was ranked third in May and fourth in June. In this respect Gaopeng improved, climbing from tenth in May to sixth position in June.

Outside of China, Groupon and Amazon's Living Social are probably two of the biggest names in the daily deals market - though other established names including Google and Facebook are also trialling similar schemes.
