Summertime blues

The August number-plate change, which sees 25 per cent of annual sales registered in just one month, could be ditched in 1996.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has set up a working party to study alternatives to the system, which costs millions in unnecessary stock charges and inefficient factory shifts.
