From Mr Trevor Hayes Sir: Regarding Ian Mackinnon's report (10 January) on live exports of veal calves, the National Farmers' Union has not poured scorn on any idea to create a market for humanely-produced British veal. In attempting to give an objectiveanalysis of the current situation, I referred to the difficulties that would have to be overcome before such a market could be developed.

There are many questions that have to be considered and discussed in a positive manner and that is precisely what is being undertaken within the NFU and with other relevant organisations in the food industry. Many farmers would be keen to develop the market for humanely-reared British veal but, at present, the economics are against such a move.

Yours sincerely, TREVOR HAYES Chief Press Officer National Farmers' Union London, WC2
