AT THE time of her death Ms Hargreaves was a member of the Alpine Club and the Alpine Climbing Group. She sat on the International Committee of the British Mountaineering Council. Among her climbing achievements was the distinction of being the first British woman to climb the north face of the Eiger.

She also climbed the north faces of the Matterhorn, Dru, Badile and Cima Grande, not to mention her ascents in the Himalayas on Kantega. Her ascent of Everest was achieved as a solo mountaineer, without all the logistical paraphernalia of today's guided tours.
