The Duchess of Sussex told a friend in March that she had given up her “entire life” for the royal family, claims an upcoming biography about her and the Duke of Sussex.

Finding Freedom, written by journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, outlines the couple’s departure from the royal family and aims to “correct the record” about them and shift perceptions.

The Sussexes did not contribute to the book; Scobie and Durand’s reporting is based on extensive insight from friends of the couple and other anonymous sources.

In a new extract of the book published in The Times, it is claimed that Meghan felt distressed by reports that she was behind the decision for the couple to step back from the royal family.

“The courtiers blame Meghan, and some family do,” a source is quoted as saying in Finding Freedom.

But the book stresses that Meghan sacrificed a lot to slot into royal life.

“As Meghan tearfully told a friend in March: ‘I gave up my entire life for this family. I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It’s very sad’,” the book states.

Another source claims that Prince Harry “wanted out” a long time ago.

“Deep down, he was always struggling within that world,” they said. “[Meghan has] opened the door for him on that.”

Other claims revealed in the extract include that Meghan and Harry grew frustrated that they “often took a back seat to other family members” when they were part of the royal family.

“While they both respected the hierarchy of the institution, it was difficult when they wanted to focus on a project and were told that a more senior ranking family member, be it Prince William or Prince Charles, had an initiative or tour being announced at the same time — so they would just have to wait,” the book reads.

A spokesperson for The Duke and Duchess of Sussex commented: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom.

“This book is based on the authors’ own experiences as members of the royal press corps and their own independent reporting.”
