New text scam targets parents, fraud centre warn

A fraud prevention group is warning parents against a new scam where victims receive a text message informing them that their child has been in an accident.

The message is sent under the guise that it has come directly from the child themselves, explaining that their phone has died and urges the parent to reply directly to that number.

If the parent responds, another message will appear asking them to purchase a top up code and send it back to them.

Once the fraudulent criminals receive the code, it will enable them to get the credit added to their phone account, subsequently stealing their money.

Action Fraud claims that this could enable them to steal up to £20.

According to the cyber crime centre, one frequent message that is:

“Mum I did try and phone from some else phone signal is really bad, there has been a terrible car accident. I’m in the ICU ward in hospital my phone ain’t switching on and needs charging. I’m on this mobile number please make sure you reply to this number.”

This is a message that has been circulating since last year.

The fraudsters are not just posing as parents either; some messages come from 'Sarah' asking the victim to do them a favour.

“I had a small accident & broke my fibula & left elbow. Can you text me back once you get this message x,” the offending text reads.

Mobile phone fraud can be carried out over text message, voice mail and even via missed call alerts.
