The British Academy Television Awards (8.30pm ITV) The Oscars get Billy Crystal - we get Bob Monkhouse, who will probably be dusting down his famous joke books as we go to press. This year the awards for film and television have been separated, and tonight is the turn of the TV folk. Francesca Annis, Kathy Burke, Derek Jacobi and Robert Carlyle are amongst those up for the famous gilded masks.

Knocking at Doomsday's Door (10.40pm ITV; not Scot) A look at some of the doomsday scenarios knocking around as we hurtle towards the millennium. The "bug" itself gets pride of place, with some enjoyably catastrophic knock on effects from all those failing computers. Plagues, asteroids and comets are the other usual suspects. The worried can take out a time- share in the Texas survivalist complex featured here.

Undercover Britain (9.30pm C4) The hidden camera series comes up with the goods again as the converted briefcase is taken inside two of Britain's gun clubs to see whether enthusiasts are circumventing the post-Dunblane ban on handguns. And of course they are. The mole - who spent a year at the two clubs - also discovered lax security meant taking weapons and ammunition from the premises was scarily easy.

The film

The Power of One (11.20pm BBC1) There's some late night Hal Hartley over on Channel 4 (12.50am) for those that like that sort of thing (I do). Otherwise, your best bet is probably this 1991 adaptation of Bryce Court-enay's novel about growing up in 1930s South Africa. Three actors play the orphaned protag-onist (latterly Stephen Dorff), an English lad amongst Afrikaners, who is befriended by a German doctor (Armin Mueller- Stahl) and taught to box by Morgan Freeman's prisoner.
