Gwyneth Paltrow says she shared her Harvey Weinstein story for her daughter's future

Gwyneth Paltrow has spoken out about her decision to go public about Harvey Weinstein’s alleged abuse, citing her daughter Apple as a motivating force.

In an interview with Savannah Guthrie on the Today show on Thursday, the Oscar winning actor described her experience of going on the record about the Hollywood mogul’s alleged exploitative behaviour.

“I was really scared,” she said. “Society had shown us basically only examples when women coming forward ended up not being advantageous for the woman. But I really felt like it was time."

Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the two reporters who broke the first story of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, cited the actor as one of the ‘unexpected heroes’ who assisted them with their Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation.

The Shakespeare in Love actor said that concerns about her own daughter entering the workplace prompted her decision to talk.

“Having a teenage daughter that’s the love of my life and worrying about her going into the workplace and feeling like if there was ever a chance that there could be a cultural shift on this stuff, [then] I wanted to participate in,” she said.

Speaking about her important role in the investigation, Paltrow added: “I never could have imagined that, collectively, a shift this seismic could happen, but I feel proud that I had a small part in it."

Earlier this week, Paltrow spoke at a conference saying that, despite appearing in box office hits for over 20 years, she wants to be remembered for her commitment to more “authentic” projects, such as Goop, her wellness company, rather than for her acting career.

Speaking at Advertising Week, the actor said, “I wouldn't say I'm that passionate about it [acting] anymore … I have had a lot of good luck and a lot of hard work, which led to a really good film career.

"At a certain point, I felt like it wasn't what I wanted to do … so I did a little pivot,” she said.

"Goop is my full-time passion ... occasionally, when [an acting job] is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I'm able to participate. I think I'm just not focused on full-time acting right now,” she said.

Paltrow's comments come ahead of her anticipated appearance in The Politician, a new Netflix series from Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Paltrow’s husband, Brad Falchuk.
