Good Day for Iceland, as Bjorn Olafsson, Hallgrim Magnusson and Einar Kristjan Stefansson became the first Icelanders to conquer Mount Everest.

Bad Day for Bugs Bunny, whose achievement last week in becoming the first cartoon character to appear on a US postage stamp provoked great criticism from American philatelists. Kathleen Wunderly, education director of the American Philatelic Society, described the decision to put Bugs on a stamp as "a crass commercial campaign that takes away from the higher purpose of the stamp programme".

Ignorant Day for Vietnam, as a survey of Vietnamese teenagers revealed that 92 per cent of them know nothing about contraception, though 90 per cent knew that Aids and other diseases could be spread through sex.
