HOMEOWNERS who insure under the Neighbourhood Watch Insurance Scheme are now starting to feel the benefits in the form of reduced house contents insurance.

The policy, piloted in London 10 years ago, is now available nationwide. Potential policyholders are given a free security check on their property and may end up having to install security locks and window locks, but the premium savings can be substantial.

The policy is available in 33 areas nationwide, and is run by General Accident. Research shows that the incidence of burglary in areas of Neighbourhood Watch drops dramatically.

The insurer said that thefts in some areas had been cut from one in six households to one in 75.
