A British woman has been shot in an incident aboard a Shell tanker in Brazil, the Foreign Office said last night.

Deborah Harrison was taken to hospital in Santos suffering from a chest injury. A Foreign Office spokesman said: "It does not immediately seem that her injuries are life threatening. The Foreign Office are in touch with Shell and with British consular staff in Brazil who are travelling from Sao Paulo to Santos."

No information was available on the nature of the incident, or Mrs Harrison's duties on the tanker.
