US STOCKS rose, helped by lower bond yields and unexpectedly strong earnings from Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 75.44, or 0.8 per cent, to 9,349.26. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 19.26, or 1.6 per cent, to 1249.23. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 34.49, or 1.5 per cent, to 2,355.38. Eight stocks rose for every five that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.
