THE DOW JONES rose to a record as investors shovelled money into companies such as Alcoa and DuPont on the expectation that their shares are inexpensive relative to their earnings outlook as Asian economies rebound. The Dow Jones rose 113.12 - or 1.06 per cent - to 10,831.71.

Software companies such as Microsoft, and Internet shares such as RealNetworks dragged the Nasdaq down 49.90, or 1.9 per cent, to 2,602.15.
