STOCKS RECORDED modest gains, with the market's recovery capped by worries over the longer-term impact of the Brazilian devaluation.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 average closed 66.20 points or 0.48 per cent higher at 13,805.06.

Japan's three largest brokerages - Nomura, Daiwa and Nikko - reported disappointing third quarter profit figures after the market had closed.
