BLUE-CHIP SHARES closed slighlty higher after a volatile session dominated by economic events.

The FTSE 100 closed 4.9 up at 6406.6 after swinging in a 120-point arc, on the back of Wall Street. The London index was down when the Dow was hit by bearish comments from the Fed chairman Alan Greenspan, but recovered after its US counterpart trimmed its losses. The smaller indexes were also higher, with the mid-cap ending 33.3 better at 5878.1 and the Small Cap up 3 at 2576.2.
