AROUND THE WORLD'S MARKETS: LONDON

LEADING SHARES fell sharply as the UK market, which was closed on Monday for the August Bank Holiday, caught up with a steep two-day decline on Wall Street.

The FTSE 100 ended 128.8 points, or 2 per cent, down at 6,246.4. Investors returning from the long weekend found the Dow had lost more than 280 points. "We had to catch up with what the Dow did when we were away and Wall Street doesn't look very convincing today either," said one dealer.
