WALL STREET fell the day after the Dow average briefly topped 10,000. "People had targeted 10,000 as their goal, so they had planned selling when it reached that level," said Ned Riley, chief investment officer at BankBoston Corp.

The Dow fell 51.06 points, or 0.5 per cent, to close at 9,879.41. Other indices followed: the S&P500 was down 8.56 points at 1,297.82, and the Nasdaq fell 10.30 points to 2,428.97. News Analysis, page 23
