GOLD STOCKS such as Newmont Mining fell for a second day on concern that the UK's sale of gold reserves will prompt similar sales by other countries.

The Dow average fell 24.34 points to 11,007.25, losing earlier gains to a record 11,100.6. The S&P 500 dropped 4.70 points to 1,340.30. The Nasdaq Composite index, laden with computer shares, gained 22.77 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 2,526.39, led by Dell Computer and Compaq as computer makers gained on earnings optimism.
