A MASS of re-ratings of technology stocks gave Wall Street a boost in early trading. By midday, the Dow Jones was up 3 points at 11,071, while the technology-laden Nasdaq was up 31 points to 2,840.
Several analysts uprated leading Internet companies on hopes that a rise in computer memory-chip prices indicated a higher demand for personal computers.
"It's still a market that's aimless at this point," one trader said. "You really have a vacuum of pure economic news."
