BLUE CHIPS ended higher after a rally fuelled by hopes that impeachment of President Clinton is now less likely after the election results. The Dow closed up 76.99 points at 8,783.14, its best close since 3 August. The index was up 130 points during the day, but a bout of late profit- taking trimmed the gains.

On the New York Stock Exchange, a brisk 861 million shares changed hands. The Nasdaq composite closed up 35.28 points at 1,823.71.
