BAT's $14m gift

BAT Industries will donate $14m (pounds 8.3m) to a small Mexican business school owned by the man who recently controlled a cigarette maker that the British tobacco company bought for $1.7bn, writes Thomas Black.

Alfonso Romo Garza, chairman of holding company Pulsar Internacional, owns DUXX, a private school that pays visiting foreign professors to teach small groups of young entrepreneurs in the northern industrial city of Monterrey.

Martin Broughton, BAT's chief executive, will make the donation tomorrow in Monterrey, Pulsar said in a statement. It added that the donation was one of the biggest this year to be given to a Latin American university.
