Innovation: Watertight solution
Researchers at the University of Paderborn in Germany have developed an irrigation system for desert areas that waters crops from below, cutting waste from evaporation. Irrigation water, plus any fertiliser, is fed under the plant by a system of plastic tubes. A layer of film below the plant's roots prevents water loss from seepage. The technique has been tested in Egypt, Jordan and the southern regions of Hungary.
