Bank of America has apologised after it addressed a letter offering a credit card to 'Lisa is a slut McIntire'.

The bank tweeted an apology and vowed to investigate the incident after Lisa McIntire, 32, from San Francisco, posted a photograph of the foul-mouthed letter on Twitter.

The Visa credit card letter read 'Lisa is a slut McIntire: you've earned this special offer' in bold letters and carried a footnote of 'Prestige without price'.

Bank of America tweeted: "We're incredibly sorry this happened and are researching now so we can take appropriate action."

The offer was tied to her membership in the Golden Key International Honour Society, a non-profit organisation which recognises academic achievement.

A representative for Golden Key said someone appeared to have inserted 'is a slut' to her contact details sometime between 2004 and 2008. But it did not confirm the exact timing or identity of the person who did it.

Melissa Leitzell, vice president of communications for Golden Key, told the LA Times: "This error happened on our end, and not with Bank of America."

McIntire, a feminist political writer, laughed off the confusion over the letter saying: "So it's possible I've been slutting' it up in a honor society's database for almost 10 years."

The incident comes shortly after a grieving father received a letter from OfficeMax, an office supplier, addressed to: 'Mike Seay, daughter killed in car crash, or current business". OfficeMax blamed a third party vendor for the inappropriate letter.
