Canada seeks 'new Carney'

Canada is looking for someone "like Mark Carney" to replace him when he becomes Governor of the Bank of England in June.

Jim Flaherty, Finance Minister, who will conduct the interviews, said he expected to make a decision "probably in April".

Unlike the UK, Canada restricts the appointment of its central bank governor to Canadian citizens. "We will look around the world. One of our restrictions is it has to be a Canadian – it doesn't matter where they live," Mr Flaherty said at Davos. He added: "We're going to look for a macroeconomist. We are going to look for someone who sees the big picture."

An external recruiting firm, Odgers Berndtson, has advertised the position, and a special committee of the Bank of Canada's board of directors will compile a list of potential candidates.

The federal cabinet must approve the appointment.
