Energy companies are giving inaccurate information to people who ring up to switch providers, says the consumer group Which?.

Despite being asked for the cheapest tariff, the six major energy suppliers failed to offer it in nearly a third of calls received.

Southern Electric mentioned its cheapest tariff in three out of 12 calls, while in seven out of 12 calls EDF Energy offered more expensive fixed-rate deals instead of a cheaper online tariff.

British Gas offered its cheapest tariff in 10 of the 12 calls. Scottish Power failed to reveal its £51 exit fees in nine out of 12 calls.
