Mabey & Johnson fined for corruption
Mabey & Johnson has been fined £3.5m for breaching UN sanctions against Iraq and bribing foreign officials.
Mabey & Johnson had a "culture" of kickbacks, Southwark Crown Court in London heard. The bridge-building firm – which was also ordered to pay a £1.1m confiscation order and costs of £350,000 – parted with sweeteners totalling £1m in Ghana and Jamaica, which is thought to have helped it to gain contracts worth £60m.
