The author David Selbourne has accepted substantial undisclosed libel damages over a review in the Independent which compared his views to those of the British National Party.
Mr Selbourne, 58, published The Principle of Duty, which set out a framework for a better social order and how this might be achieved. He complained that the comparison with the BNP was exceptionally offensive, damaging and lacking in any justification.
The newspaper's case was that the words complained of were fair comment on a matter of public interest. Shortly be- fore the case was due to come to court, the publishers of the Independent, Newspaper Publishing plc, paid a substantial sum of money into court which Mr Selbourne agreed to accept. The newspaper is obliged to pay his reasonable costs.
