Football: History lesson
When Arsenal play PAOK Salonika in the Uefa Cup next Tuesday it will be only the second time in 13 seasons of European competition that the Gunners have entertained a Greek team at Highbury. In 1981 Arsenal beat Panathinaikos 1-0 to complete a 3-0 aggregate victory in the Uefa Cup first round.
In the second round Arsenal lost to Winterslag, prompting this headline in one British broadsheet: "Now is the Winterslag of Arsenal's discontent". The Belgian team went on to lose 5-0 on aggregate to Dundee United.
England's other Uefa Cup teams - Ipswich, West Bromwich Albion and Southampton - all failed to reach the third round, while Dundee United and Aberdeen reached the quarter-finals and third round respectively.
