The message is finally getting across that the foundation-stage curriculum is too formal for three-to five-year-olds.

Sir Peter Williams's review of primary mathematics teaching – which has been endorsed wholeheartedly by the Government – recommends that more emphasis should be placed on allowing toddlers to learn through play rather than through more formal learning.

Hooray for that, we say. Bring on the maths games and let us put an end to boring youngsters through more formal lessons before they have even started compulsory schooling.
