"Sentenced to the chair" did not have its usual meaning in William Brown's case. He dared to leave his pager on in the Manhattan Criminal Court, where he was waiting to answer charges of criminal mischief.

When it went off in Judge Paul Feinman's court, the beak was not at all amused. He ordered Brown to be handcuffed to a courtroom chair, where he languished in the corner for 90 minutes until His Honour returned from lunch.
