Gallantry medal for pit tragedy victim
The highest award for civilian bravery is to be given to the widow of a man killed in a pit tragedy in Nottinghamshire two years ago. The George Medal was posthumously awarded to David Shelton, 31, the under manager of Bilsthorpe Colliery, who was killed along with two other men when a tunnel roof collapsed in August 1993. Ray Thompson, 46, a colliery chargeman who helped to rescue three other miners, will also receive the George Medal.
