He has been accused of having a "face like a pudding" and scathingly referred to as Tony Blair Lite, but David Cameron has got one up on the Prime Minister, at least in the eyes of the female electorate.

For the Tory leader appears in a list of the world's sexiest men compiled by New Woman magazine, alongside Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The Tory leader will no doubt be pleased by the absence of Mr Blair from the 100-strong list, which contains no other politicians.

More than 10,000 women voted for their pin-ups in the survey in March's edition of the magazine, which placed Mr Cameron in 92nd place, ahead of the Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, the singers James Blunt and Will Young and the chef Gordon Ramsay.

Mr Cameron, 39, who won the leadership election last year, has always attempted to present himself as a man of the people in spite his Eton education and being a distant relative of Henry VII. He has been photographed wearing Converse All-Star trainers and spoken of his love of the cult band, The Smiths.

And it appears to have paid off. Cath Rapley, New Woman's deputy editor, said the Tory leader now occupied the role of "dishy man in power" that Tony Blair inhabited "before he became old and tired".

She added: "When Tony Blair burst on the scene, the same women who now love Cameron found him sexy, before the stress of Iraq became etched in his face. Power is intoxicating and with Cameron, it is especially so because he has got potential. Women might be thinking, 'He'll be prime-minister one day'," she said.

Jilly Cooper, the novelist, admitted to have a soft spot for the "charming"politician but said he represented a "Mr Bingley" rather than a roguish "Mr Darcy" to her.

Rowan Pelling, founder of Erotic Review, conceded he had "more sexual charisma" than Mr Blair.

Ms Rapley added that Mr Cameron's "clean" image may have helped him gain pole position.

She said: "We have identified a new puritanism, in which there is a feeling in society where people are cracking down on drinking and smoking.

"People want to live more of a moral life and they want their celebrities and politicians to also live a cleaner, purer life.

"Cameron ticks all the boxes. He cycles to work and he has taken advice on green issues. He presents a hopeful, modern man image to the world who has got his morality in place."

Ms Rapley suggested his coyness over questions about drug-taking may even have added to his appeal for the magazine's readers, who are typically aged 25 to 35.

"Everybody likes a slight rebel who has been reformed," she said. "He has chosen not to be a bad boy."

The "new puritanism" may account for the waning popularity of some celebrities. Jude Law was in sixth place in the 2000 poll, but dropped to 15th in the latest. David Beckham was 11th in the new poll, three places lower than in 2000. Both have allegedly strayed in their respective relationships.

But Brad Pitt came first on the list despite his marriage break-up and subsequent relationship with Angelina Jolie. Ms Rapley said he was so popular among women that he "escaped all moral judgement".

The rock star Mick Jagger, at 62 the oldest "heart-throb", was in 67th place, with the X-Factor winner, Shayne Ward, higher than music industry pin-ups such as Justin Timberlake and Robbie Williams, in seventh place. The actor Orlando Bloom, 29, was the highest-ranking Briton in third.
