patients could be forced to have surgery similar to a lobotomy following a government decision to back the procedure in Scotland. The move is set to become legal north of the border after being approved by Scottish health minister Sam Galbraith.

Officials are monitoring the Scottish situation with a view to carrying out the procedure on non-consenting patients in England and Wales. At present it is done on consenting patients with manic depression or obsessive compulsive disorders. But the government-appointed Good Practice Group on Neurosurgery recommends some patients should be forced to have the operation.
