An 11-year-old boy who was mauled to death by rottweilers was unlawfully killed, an inquest jury decided yesterday. David Kearney, of Darwen, Lancashire, died in hospital from multiple injuries after being savaged by three dogs. A Lancashire coroner, Andre Rebello, told the hearing in Blackburn that he could not imagine "a more horrific death" than David's, and hoped the public would now understand more about the responsibility involved in keeping dogs.
David had climbed into a yard belonging to Kevin Tierney to hide from a friend when he was set on by the three dogs. He died 11 days later on 3 January. Mr Tierney, a 44-year-old builder, was criticised during the inquest for not displaying signs warning trespassers to beware of the dogs and for never giving the dogs any formal training.
