Don McLean has been arrested for domestic violence assault after police were called to the 70-year-old rock singer’s home in Maine.

Police responded to the call just before 2am on Monday night.

According to Camden Police Chief Randy Gagne in the Wisscaset report, Mr McLean was arrested without incident and spent a short time in custory.

The American Pie singer was released after paying up $10,000 for bail, according to TMZ.

He is scheduled to appear at Knox County Unified Court in Rockland on 22 February.

Mr McLean’s mugshot was first obtained by the Wiscasset newspaper and was taken at Knox County jail.

The singer lives in suburban Camden with his wife Patrisha. He has two children, Jackie and Wyatt.

Mr McLean recorded his first album, 'Tapestry' in 1969, but he shot to fame in 1971 after releasing international hit 'American Pie'. He was reported to have sold the 'American Pie' lyrics for $1.2 million at an auction in April 2015, achieving the third highest price for an American literary manuscript, as reported by CNN.

His last performance was at a local lobster festival in August.
