Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch started queuing for tickets to see their hero as Hamlet almost 20 hours before the box office opens and releases more tickets early on 5 August.

Two young women – who gave their names as Giorgia and Chiara – arrived at the Barbican Centre in London at 3pm on 4 August ahead of the advance box office opening at 10.30am.

The production, which runs for 12 weeks, is expected to attract legions of fans of the 39-year-old actor. It sold out in minutes but the Barbican is to make 30 tickets available each day at £10 each. The first preview starts at 7.15pm.

The Barbican posted a sign on the door stating that Cumberbatch would not be signing autographs before or after performances of Hamlet.
