Another World actor Charles Keating dies, aged 72

The British actor is famed for his role as the villainous Carl Hutchins in the US soap opera

Charles Keating, best known for his role in American soap opera Another World, has died, aged 72.

His son, Sean, confirmed his cause of death to be cancer.

His television credits include Edward and Mrs Simpson as Wallis Simpson's former husband Ernest and the 1981 TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited.

His performance as villain Carl Hutchins in Another World landed him four Daytime Emmy nominations and in 996 he received the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama series. Soap Opera Digest also nominated him for Outstanding Villain on three separate occasions.

He also appeared on the big screen, acting in The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), The Bodyguard (1992) and Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo (2005).

Before his film and television career, the British actor also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company during which time he became friends with Laurence Olivier.

In 1986, he received a Tony award for his Broadway performance in Loot.

Keating is survived by his wife, Mary, his two sons, and six grandchildren.
