BUCKINGHAM PALACE

4 May: The Lord Kingsdown was received by The Queen when Her Majesty invested him with the Insignia of a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

Mr Justice Morrison was received by The Queen upon his appointment as a Justice of the High Court when Her Majesty conferred upon him the honour of Knighthood and invested him with the Insignia of a Knight Bachelor.

His Excellency Mr Hiroaki Fujii was received in audience by The Queen and presented the Letters of Recall of his predecessor and his own Letters of Credence as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from Japan to the Court of St James's.

His Excellency was accompanied by the following members of the Embassy:

Mr Sadaaki Numata (Minister Plenipotentiary); Mr Isao Ohtsuka (Minister); Mr Tamon Kitabatake (Minister); Mr Ryuichiro Yamazaki (Minister and Consul General); Mr Takaaki Kojima (Counsellor); Mr Makoto Yamanaka (Counsellor); Mr Hiroshi Ueno (Counsellor) and Captain Kazuo Toyama (Defence Attache).

Mrs Fujii was also received by Her Majesty.

Sir David Gillmore (Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs) was present and the Household-in-Waiting were in

attendance.

Sir Geoffrey Holland was received by The Queen upon his retirement as Permanent Secretary, Department of Education.

Mr Thorold Masefield was received by Her Majesty upon his appointment as British High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mrs Masefield was also received by The Queen.

Her Majesty, Patron, this evening attended a Reception given by the National Children's Home at Guildhall, London EC2, to mark its One Hundred and Twenty Fifth Anniversary and was received by the Right Hon the Lord Mayor (Alderman Paul Newall) and the President, National Children's Home Action for Children (the Viscount Tonypandy).

The Lady Susan Hussey, the Right Hon Sir Robert Fellowes and Major James Patrick were in attendance.

The Duke of Edinburgh, President, Westminster Abbey Trust, this morning chaired a meeting of the trustees at Westminster Abbey, London SW1.

His Royal Highness, Patron and Trustee, attended Receptions at St James's Palace for young people who have reached the Gold Standard in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Major Charles Richards was in attendance.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Grand Master, this evening attended the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators' Annual Livery Dinner at Stationers' Hall, London EC4.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were represented by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Keith Williamson (formerly Chief of the Air Staff and Air Aide-de-Camp to The Queen) at the Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Air Chief Marshal Sir Neville Stack (Extra Gentleman Usher and formerly Air Aide-de-Camp to The Queen) which was held in St Clement Danes Church, Strand, London WC2, this morning.

Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester and The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were represented by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Simon Bland.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent were represented by Lieutenant-Commander Sir Richard Buckley.

Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy was represented by Major Sir Peter Clarke.

4 May: The Prince Edward this evening attended the Young Chef Young Waiter of the Year Awards Presentation Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London W1.

4 May: The Princess Royal, President, Animal Health Trust, today attended the Annual General Meeting and Luncheon of the Council of Mangement at the Kennel Club, 1 Clarges Street, London W1.

The engagement is announced between The Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, daughter of Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and the Earl of Snowdon, and Mr Daniel Chatto, younger son of Mrs Thomas Chatto and the late Mr Thomas Chatto.
