Ed Miliband discussed sanctions on Valdimir Putin's country over dinner with George and Amal Clooney at the house of a top London barrister, The Telegraph have reported.

Miliband has started looking into plans to prevent a selection of Russian judges and tax officials from entering the UK after being briefed over dinner.

The proposed ban comes after Russian auditor Sergei Magnitsky was beaten to death in 2009 in prison after revealing fraud on an enormous scale carried out by corrupt state officials. He uncovered theft of £150million and was imprisoned after he reported it to the authorities.

The US have already blocked 34 police chiefs, judges and tax officials from entering the country because of their involvement with the case, which was described as the start of a "new Cold War" in 2012.
