Mike Pence: Republican Vice Presidential candidate's plane slides off runway in New York

There were no reports of anyone being injured and Mr Pence spoke to reporters in the plane after the incident

Republican Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence walked away unhurt after his plane slid off a runway in New York during a landing in bad weather. There were no reports of any injuries.

Reports said Donald Trump’s running mate went and checked on the media travelling with him after the jet “fishtailed” and skidded at LaGuardia Airport at around 8pm on Thursday night.

The plane made a rough impact when it landed. The pilot slammed on the brakes and travellers could smell burning rubber, the Associated Press said. Mr Pence said mud splashed on the front windows of the cockpit. The plane apparently was brought to a halt when it skidded into a collapsable concrete barrier.

All of the passengers, including Mr Pence, were evacuated through the back of the plane. Live television footage showed Mr Pence standing in the rain near the plane among emergency vehicles, talking to police and other officials.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called Pence to check on him after the incident, the campaign said.

“Mr Trump did reach out to Governor Pence. He’s glad that everyone on board is safe,” Trump spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

Mr Trump called his running mate from his motorcade while en route to a rally in Geneva, Ohio.

MSNBC said the plane, with about 30 people onboard, was coming from Fort Dodge, Iowa, where Mr Pence had participated in a campaign event. Mr Pence had been scheduled to attend an event in New York on Thursday night, but it was cancelled.

The incident comes just a day after Mr Pence announced the death of his beagle.

Maverick, who was 13, "passed away quietly" on Tuesday evening, the Indiana governor said in a tweet.
