Actor Ian Carmichael dies at 89

The veteran British actor Ian Carmichael, seen in films such as Private's Progress and Lucky Jim, has died at the age of 89.

A star of film and television since the 1950s, the Hull-born actor was last seen in ITV's The Royal in 2009; new episodes starring Carmichael will be screened later this year. But he made his name in a succession of films for the Boulting Brothers, starring alongside Peter Sellers in 1959's I'm All Right Jack.

He then went on to play P G Wodehouse's creation Bertie Wooster in the BBC series The World of Wooster, followed by another well-received role as Lord Peter Wimsey in several series based on the mystery novels by Dorothy L Sayers. He died on Friday at his home at Esk Valley on the North York Moors having fallen ill over Christmas.
