Britain's oldest Twitter user dies aged 104

Tributes to Britain's oldest Twitterer Ivy Bean flooded the internet today following her death at the age of 104.

Staff at the Hillside Manor residential home in Bradford, West Yorkshire, confirmed that Ivy Bean died just after midnight.

Ms Bean began tweeting in 2008 and gathered almost 57,000 followers.

Among those tracking her posts about her daily life at the home were singer Peter Andre - whom she met and tweeted about regularly - and DJ Chris Evans.

Ms Bean began using Twitter after gathering an equally impressive following on Facebook - which she began using in 2007, rapidly becoming an online sensation.

She posted regularly on everything from the fish and chips she enjoyed every week to what TV shows she was watching.

When she became ill recently, her Twitter profile was taken over by home manager Pat Wright, who kept her thousands of followers updated on her progress.

Today Mrs Wright posted: "ivy passed away peacefully at 12.08 this morning."

Another post today read: "Hello all of ivys twitter friend by now you will have heard about our dear friend i cannot explain how we are all feeling here."

There was an instant response from scores of Ms Bean's friends on Facebook.

One message said: "Ivy Bean will never be forgotten by every single person who was lucky enough to know her, she touched the heart of the whole nation. Our thoughts are with her family and close friends who she will sadly leave behind. I personally will miss her facebook updates about her friday fish and chips!!! lots of love dear friend RIP xxxxx."

Another said: "You will be missed by many people and were obviously very much loved by those lucky enough to know you personally. You were young at heart & a true inspiration to all. Sleep well, Ivy xxx."
