Disappointment as Morrissey axes concert during second song

PA

Thousands of Morrissey fans were left disappointed when the star axed a concert mid way through the second song.

The former Smiths frontman, who collapsed on stage three weeks ago, was hit by a bottle of beer thrown from the crowd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

Morrissey had opened the concert with the words: "It's Saturday, it's Liverpool, it's raining, it's perfect" before launching into the Smiths' hit This Charming Man, had shown no signs of the respiratory illness which saw him admitted to hospital recently.

According to other reports, what the big jessie flounced out over was "a plastic beer glass."Oh, the perils of the artiste!

I was there at the concert fairly near the front and it was a rather rough crowd. I have no idea why supposed 'fans' pay and turn up if they are going to be so hostile to the band. One plastic glass of beer was launched into the crowd about 2 minutes before the main incident. And then a plastic glass with beer in it was thrown at Morrissey and hit him on the head splashing him with beer. A feeble attempt by security then followed to find the bonehead that threw the beer. The securirty was very shoddy.
It was a huge disappointment that Morrissey did not reappear on stage, and a shame the individual that threw the glass at him stopped the gig, but can you really blame him for leaving? Who would take that kind of abuse on the street? He seemed shaken from the incident.
Morrissey was up for the gig and it is so sad that one or two idiots spoiled the night for everyone.

Rubbish.

Their were 7999 people their who didn't throw bottles and who paid good money to see him. Is he offering them a refund, or is he keeping the money? Fair enough if he's annoyed about having a plastic cup thrown at him, but to leave shows both a lack of respect to his fans and how self-absorbed he is.

I agree with the original poster. Yes, they are offering refunds. So why should your problem be with Morrissey? Getting pelted with bottles and glasses is not something he feels he should have to put up with, and I don't blame him.

It's nothing to do with a lack of respect- if you make the decision to accept that kind of behaviour once, you are setting a precedent that it's OK to throw things at gigs. If more artists were prepared to take this kind of hard line with it, I would imagine that fewer halfwits would be doing it.

I'm surprised Morrissey didn't blame the incident on poor refereeing. He was in Liverpool, after all.
Quelle surprise.

Maybe his scheduled collapse didn't quite go as planned, so he had to come up with another reason to be back home by teatime.

Also, it says something about a man if he's so disliked that people pay money to be near enough to chuck stuff at him...
