It appears to have been the spectacle wedding of this year – well this month at least – and public figures wafted in their hoards (sort of) to say congratulations to the no-longer-perennially-single George Clooney and British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

The two tied the knot yesterday in a fairytale ceremony at the seven-star Aman Hotel on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.

A glittering flotilla of A-listers were photographed travelling via water taxi to the main event, including Cindy Crawford, Anna Wintour, Bill Murray, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and his wife Luciana, Bono, Clooney’s business partner Rande Gerber and Amal’s parents Ramzi and Baria.

This morning, the newlyweds headed on a wooden speedboat called “Amore” for the Cipriani hotel, expected to have a post-wedding lunch.

One of Clooney’s closest pals, Ben Affleck, was unable to attend the wedding due to work commitments but told ET Canada: “Some people have to work and everybody else gets to be in Venice.

“But [he] found a great girl and I'm happy for them. I wish them the best.”

Clooney, 53, and Amal, 36, are both passionate about issues close to their hearts, with the actor previously highlighting the plight of refugees in Darfur, Sudan, while Amal has previously represented Julian Assange.

Some stars went on Twitter to congratulate the Hollywood giant, while others simply referenced it and make random observations:
